9 Dhul Hijjah · Arafat — inside the marked boundary

Wuquf at Arafat

الوقوف بعرفة

Hajj is Arafah. Being inside the boundary for a moment after zawal on the 9th until dawn of the 10th fulfils the pillar. The sunnah is to stay from after Dhuhr until sunset, in dua.

When. Leave Mina after Fajr. Combined Dhuhr+Asr at Namirah or in camp, then dua until Maghrib. Do not leave before sunset.

Steps

  1. 1Confirm you are inside Arafat. Wadi Uranah, in front of Masjid Namirah, is outside the boundary.
  2. 2Pray Dhuhr and Asr shortened and combined, one adhan and two iqamahs, after the khutbah if you attend Namirah.
  3. 3Face the qiblah. Hands up. Repeat the tawhid dua of Arafah, then ask for everything you came for — in your own language.
  4. 4Keep wudu if you can. Stand, sit, or lie if you are ill. Shade is allowed; there is no need to climb Jabal ar-Rahmah.
  5. 5After sunset, move to Muzdalifah without praying Maghrib in Arafat.

Keep in mind

  • This is the day. Phone less. Write a list of names the night before.
  • Fasting Arafah is for those not on Hajj. Pilgrims should eat and drink so they can make dua.
  • Women in menses still perform wuquf. It is the one rite that does not need a mosque or tawaf.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving Arafat before sunset (the sunnah; the majority require presence until Maghrib for the one who was there by day).
  • Standing on the mountain and losing hours in the crush.
  • Praying Maghrib in Arafat.

Duas for this rite

Talbiyah

Labbayk Allahumma labbayk. Labbayka la shareeka laka labbayk. Innal-hamda wan-ni‘mata laka wal-mulk. La shareeka lak.

Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Surely all praise, blessing, and dominion are Yours. You have no partner.

The best dua on Arafah

There is none worthy of worship except Allah, alone, without partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He is over all things capable.
