Halq or Taqsir

الحلق أو التقصير

Men: shaving the whole head is best; trimming all around is allowed. Women: a fingertip from a lock, never shaving. After this (and ramy), the first tahallul begins — everything is permitted except intimacy until Tawaf al-Ifadah.

When. After ramy, and after hady if you follow the Hanafi order.

Steps

  1. 1Keep your ihram on until the cut is done.
  2. 2Men: sit for a full shave, or a uniform trim with clippers.
  3. 3Women: cut in a tent, bus, or hotel — not in the open street.
  4. 4You may now wear clothes, cover the head (men), and apply scent. Intimacy waits for Ifadah.

Keep in mind

  • This is the moment the ihram “opens.” Keep a cap; sun on a newly shaved head is sharp.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving Ihram clothes off before the cut, then being unsure of your state.
