Tawaf al-Ifadah

طواف الإفاضة

A pillar of Hajj. Seven circuits like any tawaf, then two rak‘ahs. Without it, Hajj is incomplete. Tamattuʿ pilgrims (and others who have not yet done sa‘i for Hajj) do sa‘i after it.

When. From Fajr of the 10th (or after midnight for some). Most groups go late on the 10th or on the 11th to miss the worst crush. It may be delayed if needed — even until you leave — but do it before departing Makkah, and intimacy remains haram until it is done.

Steps

  1. 1Wudu. No idtiba‘ or ramal in this tawaf — you are out of the first ihram style.
  2. 2Seven laps from the Black Stone, two rak‘ahs, Zamzam.
  3. 3Tamattuʿ: sa‘i for Hajj now, Safa to Marwa, seven legs.
  4. 4Qiran/Ifrad: skip sa‘i if you already did it after tawaf al-qudum.
  5. 5After Ifadah (and sa‘i if required), the second tahallul is complete.

Keep in mind

  • If menses start before Ifadah, wait until you are pure. You may not leave Makkah without it. Group scholars will plan this with you.
  • Night tawaf on the 10th/11th is often kinder than midday.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing this with Tawaf al-Wadaʿ and leaving without Ifadah.
  • Doing sa‘i twice on Qiran without need.

Duas for this rite

Starting each circuit of Tawaf

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ

Bismillah, Allahu Akbar.

In the name of Allah, and Allah is the Greatest.

Between the Yemeni Corner and the Black Stone

رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanah, wa fil-akhirati hasanah, wa qina ‘adhaban-nar.

Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

After the two rak‘ahs

اللَّهُمَّ اعِنِّي عَلَى ذِكْرِكَ وَشُكْرِكَ وَحُسْنِ عِبَادَتِكَ

Allahumma a‘inni ‘ala dhikrika wa shukrika wa husni ‘ibadatik.

O Allah, help me to remember You, to thank You, and to worship You well. This is the dua the Prophet ﷺ taught Mu‘adh after salah. It is not a special Ifadah formula — any dua is sound here.
