Ihram at the Miqat

الإحرام من الميقات

Ihram is a state, not only two towels. You enter it at or before the miqat with a shower, the garments, the intention, and the Talbiyah.

When. Before crossing the miqat. Jeddah flights usually announce it ~45 minutes before landing — do not wait until the airport.

Steps

  1. 1Trim nails, remove underarm and pubic hair, and take a ghusl if you can.
  2. 2Men: two unstitched white cloths, sandals that leave the ankle and instep visible, no sewn cap. Women: ordinary modest clothes; no niqab or gloves.
  3. 3Pray two rak‘ahs if it is not a disliked time, then make the intention for your rite.
  4. 4Start the Talbiyah and keep it going at each change of state — boarding, landing, entering the Haram.
  5. 5From now: no scent, no cutting hair or nails, no hunting, no marriage contract, no sexual relations. Men do not cover the head; women do not cover the face with niqab.

Keep in mind

  • Tamattuʿ: ihram for Umrah now, then a second ihram for Hajj on the 8th from Makkah.
  • Qiran: one ihram for Hajj and Umrah together; you stay in it until the 10th.
  • Ifrad: ihram for Hajj only.
  • If you cross the miqat without ihram you must return to it, or offer a dam (a sacrifice in the Haram) according to most scholars — ask your group.

Common mistakes

  • Waiting until Jeddah airport, which is inside the miqat for most travellers.
  • Wearing stitched underwear, belts with heavy stitching, or socks that cover the ankle (men).
  • Putting on scented wipes or soap after ihram has started.

Duas for this rite

Talbiyah

Labbayk Allahumma labbayk. Labbayka la shareeka laka labbayk. Innal-hamda wan-ni‘mata laka wal-mulk. La shareeka lak.

Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Surely all praise, blessing, and dominion are Yours. You have no partner.

Intention for Ihram

لَبَّيْكَ اللَّهُمَّ عُمْرَةً · لَبَّيْكَ اللَّهُمَّ حَجًّا

Labbayk Allahumma ‘umrah. / Labbayk Allahumma hajjan.

Here I am, O Allah, for Umrah. / Here I am, O Allah, for Hajj. Speak the one that matches your ihram. Qiran: “for Hajj and Umrah.”

Glory to the One who subjected this to us, though we could not have done it ourselves, and to our Lord we will return. O Allah, we ask You in this journey for righteousness, taqwa, and deeds You are pleased with. Make this journey easy and fold up its distance. You are the Companion on the journey and the Guardian of the family. I seek refuge in You from the hardship of travel, a gloomy sight, and a bad return in wealth and family.
