10 Dhul Hijjah · Jamarat Bridge, the largest (Aqabah) pillar only
Ramy of Jamarat al-Aqabah
رمي جمرة العقبة
Seven pebbles at the big pillar only. This is the first rite of Eid for the pilgrim. Stop the Talbiyah as the first pebble leaves your hand.
When. From Fajr of the 10th (some allow from midnight for the weak). Mid-morning is traditional. Avoid the densest waves if your group can.
Steps
1Enter the bridge on the correct level for your crowd. Follow signs for Jamarat al-Aqabah — it is the last of the three, toward Makkah.
2Throw seven pebbles one by one, saying Allahu Akbar with each. They should land in the basin.
3Do not stay for dua here on the 10th. Move on to hady and tahallul.
4If a pebble misses, throw a spare. Do not pick from the trough.
Keep in mind
The order on the 10th that the Prophet ﷺ followed: ramy, then hady, then shaving, then tawaf. Other orders are valid with a dam according to some schools — Hanafis are the strictest. Stay with your madhhab or group scholar.
Wheelchair lanes exist. Use them if you cannot stand in the crush.
Common mistakes
Stoning all three pillars on the 10th. Only Aqabah.
Throwing shoes, umbrellas, or large rocks.
Pushing to the wall. The basin is large; the front is not required.
