Tawaf of Umrah

طواف العمرة

Seven circuits, Kaaba on your left, starting from the Black Stone line. This is your Umrah tawaf on Tamattuʿ. Qiran and Ifrad do arrival tawaf instead, not a separate Umrah.

When. After you reach Makkah and settle your bags. Avoid peak Jumu‘ah and the hour after fard prayers if you can.

Steps

  1. 1Enter the Haram with the mosque dua, wudu intact. Idtiba‘ (men): right shoulder uncovered for this tawaf only.
  2. 2Start at the Black Stone. Kiss, touch, or point at it from afar and say Allahu Akbar. Do not stop the flow of people.
  3. 3Ramal (men): a strong walk in the first three laps if the crowd allows, then a normal walk.
  4. 4Seven full laps. Recite the Rabbana dua between the Yemeni Corner and the Black Stone; otherwise any dhikr.
  5. 5When finished, cover both shoulders, pray two rak‘ahs — ideally behind Maqam Ibrahim, otherwise anywhere in the mosque — then drink Zamzam.

Keep in mind

  • Wudu is a condition of tawaf for the Shafi‘i, Maliki, and Hanbali schools — renew it and repeat. In the Hanafi school the tawaf still counts, but a dam is due. Ask which you follow before you start.
  • Wheelchairs and the upper floors are valid. Distances are longer on higher levels.
  • Do not harm anyone to reach the Black Stone. Pointing from the line is enough.

Common mistakes

  • Starting from the wrong door, not the Black Stone line.
  • Kissing the Yemeni Corner or Maqam Ibrahim — only the Black Stone is kissed.
  • Praying the two rak‘ahs in a walkway and blocking tawaf.

Duas for this rite

On first seeing the Kaaba

اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ، لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ

Allahu Akbar. La ilaha illallah.

Allah is the Greatest. There is none worthy of worship except Allah. No specific wording from the Prophet ﷺ is established for this moment. Say the takbir, send salawat, and ask in your own words. The guidebook line “increase this House in honour…” is not a proven hadith.

Starting each circuit of Tawaf

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ

Bismillah, Allahu Akbar.

In the name of Allah, and Allah is the Greatest.

Between the Yemeni Corner and the Black Stone

رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanah, wa fil-akhirati hasanah, wa qina ‘adhaban-nar.

Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

Entering a mosque

اللَّهُمَّ افْتَحْ لِي أَبْوَابَ رَحْمَتِكَ

Allahumma iftah li abwaba rahmatik.

O Allah, open for me the gates of Your mercy.
