Tawaf al-Wadaʿ

طواف الوداع

Seven circuits with no sa‘i after. It is the last thing you do in Makkah. Residents of the Haram are exempt. Women in menses are exempt.

When. After all other rites, as close as you can to your actual departure from Makkah. A night in Jeddah after Wadaʿ is widely tolerated; a new shopping trip is not the point.

Steps

  1. 1Wudu. Seven laps, two rak‘ahs. No ramal, no sa‘i.
  2. 2Zamzam if you wish. Look at the Kaaba. Leave without lingering for another tawaf.
  3. 3Travel. If you stay many hours for a meal, most scholars do not require a repeat; if you settle again, repeat it.

Keep in mind

  • Fill Zamzam at the official distribution points, not by blocking tawaf.
  • Madinah is usually visited before Hajj or after you have left Ihram fully — there is no ihram for Madinah.

Common mistakes

  • Doing Wadaʿ then staying two more days of shopping without repeating it.
  • Skipping it without an excuse. A dam may be required.

Duas for this rite

Starting each circuit of Tawaf

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ

Bismillah, Allahu Akbar.

In the name of Allah, and Allah is the Greatest.

Between the Yemeni Corner and the Black Stone

رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanah, wa fil-akhirati hasanah, wa qina ‘adhaban-nar.

Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

Leaving a mosque

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ مِن فَضْلِكَ

Allahumma inni as’aluka min fadlik.

O Allah, I ask You of Your bounty.

Farewell at Tawaf al-Wada

اللَّهُمَّ لَا تَجْعَلْهُ آخِرَ الْعَهْدِ بِبَيْتِكَ الْحَرَامِ، وَارْزُقْنِي الْعَوْدَ إِلَيْهِ

Allahumma la taj‘alhu akhiral-‘ahdi bi-baytik al-haram, warzuqnil-‘awda ilayh.

O Allah, do not make this my last visit to Your Sacred House, and grant me return to it.
